Hello, Artenauta! Among the various mixtures that we can get to work in our works, today we bring you a very interesting color, mainly to represent elements of interior and exterior decoration, clothing and jewelry … Today we tell you how to make the golden color.
First of all, as always, we are going to tell you a little about this color, looking at aspects such as its symbolism and telling you some curiosities. Let’s get started!
The golden color
- It is named after the most characteristic metal of this color: gold.
- Actually, gold is not a color (although we refer to it as such colloquially), but an effect that manages to give the impression, through the handling of the painting technique, that it is a metallic material, with the brightness that characterizes it (that is, it does not look like paint on canvas, but a metal).
Symbology of the color gold
Although it is within the yellow range, the meaning is different:
- Fidelity: this is because gold cannot be combined with other elements by melting. For this reason, and the fact that it is a very durable material over time, wedding rings are usually made of gold.
- Merit and pride: that’s why many awards have this color (like Hollywood’s Oscar Awards, for example).
- Wealth, luxury, articles for high purchasing power…
Curiosities about gold
- It is a color related to the alchemists, who, during the Middle Ages, aimed to transform other materials into gold.
- For the Incas, gold was the blood of the sun.
- The use of gilding in painting has been closely linked to religious works.
- Gold is the representative color of the monarchy and nobility.
How to make gold color
As gold is within the yellow range, we will use the mixture of different shades of this color with others to achieve the golden color. Here are two ways to obtain the color gold:
- Medium cadmium yellow and tan shade
- Indian yellow and ivory black
In general, to achieve the golden color, we can do it through the earth tones (there is a great variety that we can use for this purpose), but, paying vital importance to the brightness, to the contrasts between dark and light and that these are very well trimmed. This way we will get the metallic look we are looking for (in our
Online Painting Course
you will learn how to represent the appearance of any material: metal, glass, fabric…).
You should know that you can also find gold pigments on the market, i.e. paints containing metallic pigments that reflect light.
As always, we recommend that you add small amounts of each color until you obtain the desired shade of gold as a result.
Understanding and assimilating the Theory of Color is of vital importance in order to work with paint and obtain the desired results, avoiding unnecessary waste of pigments and achieving much more vibrant and realistic finishes.
