Hello, Artenauta! In our tour through the different shades that we are going to use in the color palette, today we are going to stop at one of the most used; for this, we are going to tell you how to make the color brown.

As you know it is a very present tone when it comes to landscapes, but not only there, in fact it is one of the most used shades in all areas, as it is present in virtually all aspects of daily life.

The brown color is within the brown range and has a slight tendency towards violet; therefore, we are going to tell you some curiosities about the brownish and violet tones, as well as to talk about their symbolism at a psychological level, which can help you to convey different sensations to the viewer. Let’s start!

How to make brown color

  • For the mixture, we need the following shades:
    • Lemon yellow
    • Magenta
    • Cyan
    • White (to create shades of café au lait)
  • How to make the brown color step by step:
    1. We mix the yellow with a small amount of magenta, obtaining a neutral orange.
    2. We include cyan and magenta in large quantities, adding them little by little to find the tone we are looking for.

  • The coffee color refers to the tone that coffee beans acquire when roasted.
  • Although colloquially we refer to brown (or, in this case, coffee) as a color, we must remember that it is a broken tone, that is, for its mixture we use the three primary colors in different proportions.
  • Brown is a color that, when related to the earth we walk on, symbolizes stability, sense of belonging, hospitality, seriousness, comfort, reliability, resistance, protection, safety, security, strength and naturalness. On the other hand, it can also be identified with sadness and loneliness.
  • On a psychological level, the meaning of the color purple is related to elegance, spirituality, wisdom, consciousness, the mysterious, the magical or sensitivity. It is the middle ground between the strength and vitality of the color red and the calmness of the color blue.
  • In some countries, brown is directly referred to as brown.

Remember that the brownish range is very wide and, depending on the quantities you use of each pigment when mixing, the final result will have one tendency or another: earth, ochre, brown, chocolate brown… Experiment and discover the multiple possibilities until you get the desired shade.
