Hello, Artenauta! Today, in our eagerness to bring you closer to the wonderful world of painting and drawing, helping you to bring out the artist in you, we teach you everything you need to know about
how to learn to draw in pencil step by step.
At the end of this post we propose a series of exercises, ordered from lower to higher level of difficulty, in which we explain how to achieve each result step by step.
The most important thing, in order to start drawing, is to be clear about the materials we are going to use:
-
Pencil.
It is the main tool we will need. It will allow you not only to draw lines, but also to add shadows and reflections.
We can find pencils with different degrees of hardness, depending on the use we want to give and the results we want to achieve. In this sense, we can find pencils labeled with an H (those with a higher level of hardness) or with a B (soft pencils), accompanied by a number (the higher the number, the higher the level of hardness of the pencil). We can also find HB pencils, which would be the standard, the union between soft and hard; and F pencils, which would be similar to HB, but with a greater tendency to hardness.
The harder the pencil is, the softer the line we get.
-
Paper
Graphite pencils tend to be greasy, so it is best to use paper with a smooth surface and fine grain. We must also take into account whether we are going to erase frequently or not, in order to choose a paper with a higher or lower level of thickness.
Regarding color, if we are going to make our drawing entirely with graphite pencil, it is advisable to use white or beige paper.
We can find different formats depending on the size of the work to be done.
-
Diffuser
We must have a sandpaper at hand to remove the pencil residues that are stored in the tip when using it.
-
Eraser.
We will use it, not only to correct errors, but also to create highlights. We recommend moldable rubber bands, which you will find in different formats, from firmer to softer.
Once we are clear about the materials to be used, we leave you with a series of tips so that your start in the world of drawing is successful, achieving the best results as you practice:
- Try to draw often (better every day, even if it’s just for a little while). Practice makes perfect.
- Do not despair with mistakes, observe and learn from them.
- You can carry a notebook with you at all times (in a size that makes it easy to carry) and practice wherever you are, whenever you have a free moment.
- Get inspired by observing the environment, magazines, books…
- Start with small sketches.
