Fra Angelico in 10 tips

  1. Fra Angelico was born around 1395 in Vicchio (Florence).
  2. He entered the Dominican Order in 1417, becoming a friar, under the name of Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John of Fiesole). He would later be given the name Fra Angelico (Brother Angelical) due to his devout and humble nature.
  3. Known for his religious paintings represented with a great level of expressiveness and detail, in which he combined Gothic and early Renaissance styles.
  4. Fra Angelico is known mainly for his frescoes (paintings on wet plaster with water-based pigments).
  5. He created a large number of frescoes in churches and monasteries in Italy, including the Convent of San Marco in Florence and the Vatican in Rome.
  6. His most famous work is the “Annunciation,” a depiction of the Virgin Mary receiving the news from the Angel Gabriel that she will give birth to the son of God.that the archangel Gabriel tells her that she will give birth to the son of God.
  7. Other famous works are “The Last Judgment”, “The Crucifixion” and “The Coronation of the Virgin”.
  8. Fra Angelico was also noted for his skill in painting altarpieces, panels and portraits. His work is characterized by his ability to capture the emotion and spirituality of his subjects, influencing other contemporary and later artists with his technique.
  9. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance and a pioneer of the artistic style known as Early Renaissance.
  10. He died on March 15, 1455 in Rome.
